World Humanitarian Day 2016 (August 19)

On the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, France pays tribute to humanitarian workers, who provide relief and protection to populations in need all over the world, notably to the 65 million people who have been forced to leave their homes.

Humanitarian personnel, who work in increasingly difficult conditions, often at great personal risk, continue to be deliberately targeted. States have a responsibility to facilitate their work and ensure that everyone in their territory complies with international law and the principles of humanitarian action. Those who violate international law or humanitarian principles must not go unpunished.

The safety of humanitarian workers must be guaranteed. France is taking action on the ground with all of its partners. It is mobilized within the UN Security Council, which has adopted resolutions to this effect. We called on the international community to protect humanitarian workers and to fully respect international law, notably at the 32nd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in December 2015 and at the first world Humanitarian Summit in May 2016.
