Proparco, a financial institution serving the private sector and sustainable development


Proparco, a subsidiary of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) dedicated to the private sector, has been working for 40 years to promote sustainable economic, social and environmental development.

Through loans, equity investments or guarantees, Proparco participates in the financing and support of companies and financial institutions in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Proparco’s interventions aim to strengthen the contribution of private actors to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the international community in 2015.

To this end, Proparco finances companies whose activities contribute to the creation of decent jobs and income, the provision of essential goods and services and the fight against climate change.

To achieve its mission, Proparco relies on plural governance. Alongside the AFD, its majority shareholder, it brings together a diversity of actors, public and private, French and European, but also African and Latin American. Proparco has over 200 employees based in Paris and its 11 offices around the world. It also relies on AFD’s network of 72 branches and representative offices abroad.

The office of Proparco in Douala covers the entire CEMAC zone as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo. Today, the portfolio of the zone comprises 15 projects signed in progress among which in the financial sector (BICEC, SGC, Oxus RD Congo), insurance (Activa), energy (Eneo), transport (Transgabonais) ...

Beyond funding, Proparco’s role is to promote the emergence of responsible economic and financial players in developing and emerging countries. It helps its clients achieve better environmental, social and governance performance.
