Opening of the 1st Contemporary Art Gallery in Yaoundé
The first contemporary art gallery of the city of Yaoundé was inaugurated on May 30 by the French ambassador, Gilles Thibault and the Minister of Arts and Culture, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi.
First place of the city dedicated to contemporary art, the gallery offers to young Cameroonian artists a space for exhibition and exchange. Led by the Ministry of Arts and Culture and the French Embassy, the renovation and the layout of the building housing the gallery was financed by the Debt Reduction-Development Contracts (C2D) between France and Cameroon.
From May 30 to July 31 2017, the gallery will host an exhibition entitled « Cheminement(s), art contemporain au Cameroun », which brings together 23 Cameroonian artists. This exhibition is an illustration of the strong creativity of Cameroonian contemporary art. It presents the works of confirmed artists and young talents in all disciplines: painting, sculpture, photography, drawing and video. The forty art works offer visitors the image of a lively, diverse and original artistic creation.
The exhibition « Cheminement(s), art contemporain au Cameroun » is organized jointly by the French Institute of Cameroon and the Ministry of Arts and Culture. It participates in a new dynamic in the promotion and diffusion of visual arts and contemporary art in Cameroon, and in the city of Yaounde in particular.
